THE FIRST HOLE
The first hole is a serious challenge. The drive from in front of the PGC Administration Office is not the sort of hole to start a round for those who have not warmed up sufficiently. The hole was significantly altered in November 2003 with the 1st tee box moved from between the original 9th and 18th fairways. In addition, a fence line was built across the former 9th tee box area in order to safeguard players from the driving range. The driving range is now Out of Bounds all along the left edge of the fairway.

The old right fairway bunker in front of the original ladies 1st was removed in early 2003 and replaced by a copse of casuarina (C. esquisetifolia) trees during 2004. During the 'hole-swap', a new ladies tee box was built in a more central location, and cross fairway drainage altered in order to accommodate this relocation. During 2005 a new pathway was completed to connect all the tees in the area and help provide a thoroughfare for the golf course maintenance equipment. In late October and November 2005, the old driving range fencing (formally assigned to other parts of the course) and the relatively new Berkhart fencing was replaced by 8m high purpose built fencing.
There is a generous fairway from the 250 yard mark, but gradually narrows toward the green, with new casuarina trees planted in 2004 on the right, and a sungai on the left. The green itself was altered during the late 90's with the addition of two extended 'humps' at the front of the green and a grass bank at the rear. The grass bank was removed in 2004 as it became largely GUR in the dry weather. The green was therefore quite a challenge, as the 'humps' largely obscure the green from the fairway. Indeed, when the ground conditions are wet and the flag is at the front portion of the green, hitting a second shot close to the pin is a very good shot indeed, if not impossible.

The original plans for a completely new 1st green, offering a significantly better target that can be seen from the fairway was unfortunately unable to progress due to contractual problems. However, in mid November 2005, the Maintenance Team were able to modify the front of the green, and extend the rear, and connect both new parts of the green with an extended bunker along the length of the right side of the green. This also enabled the green to be shaped, with the bunker cutting in to the rear of the green, so making the green longer but more 'pear shaped'. This new design, although not the same as the original 2004 design, does offer significantly more pin locations, with especially difficult pin positions on the right, alongside the new bunker.

Local Rules:
(i) The driving range fence line along the left side of the fairway is Out of Bounds.
(ii) The ditch on the left side of the fairway beyond the driving range which extends to the left of, and behind the 1st green is a lateral water hazard.
