Sailors,
The family Makan social hunting sailing day was excellent. Four (4) Hobies sailed out with some fully family loaded. The sailing conditions were superb, a nice constant medium strong wind allowed for easy and safe sailing conditions while also offering enough options for more adventure for those daring to do so.
To allow for the kiddies favorite hunting event quite some colorful balloons with anchor weight were deployed on some distance out and nicely spread out. Following an official start sequence the team headed out to catch the balloons. Initially everyone focused on the close-by balloons causing some interesting situations inclusive of a small accident of two boats colliding (low speed, no damage). Certainly the children enjoyed the hunt greatly, Nick (daddy Kelvin) was the star having caught 8 balloons. The price being a handy Hobie clamp-on bag including stubby went to him. The second prize was won by the duo Thomas and Lucas (dad Koos-Jan and mums Lisette) who received their stubbies.
To allow for a bit more practice a figure 8 course was set at almost broad reach. The actual start did go well but there is surely room for improvement. Where Fam. Mojet passed the start line at the 10 seconds Vladimir did so after 40 seconds as last. Rounding the buoy was quite interesting since only Lindsay and Brian understood what such means in racing terms. Fam. Mojet made a tack but did never rounded the proper buoy, instead they hugged the buoy intense (don’t repeat at Champs!!!) . Kelvin crossed the start again and as alternative (we were forgiving) tried to make the tack around the safety boat. This clearly appeared not effective when the buoy ended up in between both hulls. Vladimir followed Kelvin and also lost valuable minutes.
After two rounds Kelvin and Nick won the race followed by Fam. Mojet only 90 seconds later.
The second race was set in gybing fashion. The start was rather sub-optimum with Fam. Mojet crossing the start line 1min-18sec late followed by Lindsay/Brain at 1min-35sec and Kelvin at 5min-19sec. After the first round it was clear that the final race would be between Fam. Mojet and Lindsay/Brain. After the first round Fam. Mojet was only 5 seconds ahead of the rest. At the last before finish roles had changed and Lindsay/Brian were well ahead. However, their final gybing was rather slow and too far from the finish line. Fam. Mojet took advantage with a very sharp turn and almost overtook Lindsay/Brian. In the end Lindsay\Brian won with an advantage of 3 seconds only. This was certainly an excellent learning moment. The race is never over until finished completely.

The 28th Panaga Triathlon will be held on Sunday, 23rd November. This is an event in which competitors, compete in three disciplines - swimming, cycling and running.
As for previous triathlons, the events will be: full triathlon (men), full triathlon (women), full triathlon (mixed team), mini triathlon (men) and mini triathlon (women).
The full triathlon involves a 500 m pool swim, followed by a 24 km cycle ride and then finishes with a 5 km run. The mini triathlon has a 300 m pool swim, a 16 km cycle and a 2.5 km run. For the team event, also held over the full distance, you can have one person doing the swim, another one doing the cycle, and a third person doing the run. The one stipulation for the team event is that all teams will be mixed – having at least one male and one female in the team.
In the interest of safety, two restrictions are imposed. Any cyclist must be 16 years of age or over and all cyclists must wear helmets.
The last triathlon took place in November 2007, in which 55 competitors competed, with 18 athletes competing in the full triathlon, another 14 competing in the mini triathlon and there were 8 mixed teams. The winner of the full triathlon was Jan Willem Verkaik. He finished in a time of 1:23:56. This time the winning time for the team, which was RAD in a time of 1:15:31 was faster than the winning time of full triathlon individual.
The emphasis for the triathlon is fun and the aim is to get competitors interested in a rapidly growing sport. All entrants are rewarded with a souvenir t-shirt and free breakfast. Entry fee is set at $20.
The closing date for entries is 14th November. Entry forms can be obtained by email panaga.triathlon@gmail.com or Panaga Club 28th Triathlon
