Panaga Club Library News - March 2010 (Update 19/3/2010)

Library Opening Hours:

In response to member requests, the library will be opened for a trial period during lunch Wednesdays from 11:30 to 1:00 during the months of April and May.

Monday + Wednesday 4.00 pm - 5.30 pm
Tuesday + Thursday 5.00 pm - 7.00 pm
Friday     8.00 am - 9.30 am
Saturday 9.30 am - 11.30 am

Panaga Library Book Club:   The next meeting for the book club will be April 29th at 10:00am in the library.  We will be reviewing the book “Figures In Silk” by Vanora Bennett.  Set just after the War of the Roses, this historical fiction tells the story of two sisters and their different paths to success.  The library will have two copies available for members to checkout.  Everyone is encouraged to join us whether you’ve read the book or not.  Coffee, tea, and light refreshments will be served.  The book club is open to all members of the Panaga Club.

The book club selection for May is “The Piano  Tuner.”  It is available now in the library.

The book reviewed last month, “A Fortune-Teller Told Me” by Tiziano Terzani was well received by the members of the club.  The title of the book is misleading as the interactions of the author with the fortune-tellers were of little interest to most of the readers.  The journeys both physical and psychological of the author were beautifully written.  His descriptions of places he visited in southeast Asia and the changes to the culture and landscape over the years were entertaining and thought-provoking.

New in the Library:  The average American will consume the equivalent of 21,000 animals over the course of a lifetime.  So claims author Jonathan Safran Foer in his latest offering, “Eating Animals.”  Normally a successful if unorthodox writer of fiction, Jonathan Safran Foer investigates the harsh realities of commercial and industrialized agriculture as he attempts to make his own decisions about vegetarianism.  Although not intended to convert the carnivores, this book will definitely make them think about the journey of their food to the grocery store.

On a lighter note, “The Endless Forest” is the final book of the Wilderness series by Sara Donati.  In “The Happiness Project,” Gretchen Rubin writes a compelling tale of the year she spent trying the many different paths to happiness.  Also, “Let the Great World Spin,” is a critically praised and award winning novel about 1970s New York by Colum McCann.  The next two book club selections, “Figures In Silk” and “The Piano Tuner” have also arrived and can be reserved at the desk.

Monthly Spotlight:  In March, the spotlight is on “Gardening.”  From novels to how-to guides, come browse the selected variety of DVDs and books that include “Tropical Gardens,” “The Secret Garden,” and “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.”

Bargain Bookshelf in the Panaga Club Lobby: Take a look at the selection of books available for only $1 each, payable by CHIT.  We add new selections each week.

If you have any questions or for more information, email to library@panagaclub.com.
