Panaga Junior Tennis Camp - August 2010
Last week the Panaga Tennis Courts were alive with a flurry of activity morning and afternoon, with children participating in the second Panaga Junior Tennis Camp. Head Coach Domingo was ably assisted by resident coach Edward, guest coaches Richard, Asher and Bambi and behind the scenes Tess.
The camp lasted five days and anyone expecting an easy time soon realised on day one that was not to be. The first session started with five laps of the Padang field!
During the course of the week, the children learnt, amongst other things, Technical Training with an emphasis on basic skill development while having fun. Tactical Development which focused on advance drill and game based exercises, also the meaning of Values - how to develop ones game style whilst taking into account, good sportsmanship, cooperation and teamwork. A fun Mini Tournament was held on the final day putting all of the above into practice and on completion of the camp each child received a written evaluation and group photo.
It was mentally and physically a tough challenging week for all ages and abilities. Rain threatened play a couple of times but anyone hoping for a rest soon realised that was not to be. Sheltering from the rain Coach Domingo fired a variety of tactical questions e.g. What do you do if your opponent constantly hits drop shots at you?
Exhausted but happy, at the end of the week everyone who participated was in agreement, it had been a fantastic experience. It was also rather impressive watching (not sure if us adults would have had the fitness to compete!).
Thank you to everyone who helped over the week on court and behind the scenes, in particular, as always Tess for her support and Jackie for her excellent photo's. Last but not least, an especially big thank you to Domingo and his team of coaches Edward, Asher, Bambi and Richard. How they managed to maintain their enthusiasm, concentration and energy for the whole week is beyond belief. What is their secret? Must be something in the noodles!
Oh, by the way, in case you were wondering, as in many sports nothing is quite as simple as you think and there are various answers to the ''drop'' shot question. The most common tactical answer would be ''go to the net'', unless of course, your opponent is Nadal or Federer, but, that is another story and another camp!
