Using of Range Finder/GPS Tools Newsflash 14/12/2011

Rule 14-3: Rangefinders and other Electronic Distance Measuring Devices

Q. Is it legal under the Rules of Golf to use a Rangefinder or other Electronic Distance Measuring device?

A. The use of a distance-measuring device is a breach of Rule 14-3, which states that during a stipulated round, the player shall not use any artificial device or unusual equipment for the purpose of gauging or measuring distance or conditions which might affect his play (Rule 14-3).

The USGA Handicap System requires players to post scores made when a device which measures distance only has been used (regardless of whether the Committee has adopted the Local Rule described below). Scores made while using a device which measures other conditions which might affect play (e.g., wind speed or the slope of the ground) are not acceptable for Handicapping purposes. Please refer to Section 5-1 of the USGA Handicap System Manual regarding acceptable scores.

The Committee may, by Local Rule, permit the use of devices that measure distance only (i.e., the device may not be used to measure other conditions such as wind-speed or the slope of the ground). (Rule 14-3 Note and Decision 14-3/0.5)

NOTE:

PANAGA GOLF CLUB HAS NOT PERMITTED THE USE OF DISTANCE MEASURING DEVISES FOR TOURNAMENT PLAY.

KBBC General News

Obituary

Frank van Doorn passed away on January 19th following a motorcycle accident on January 11th 2012 in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.

Frank lived for 13 years in Brunei and was a stalwart of the KBBC committee and one of the most highly regarded Hobie sailors and instructors that the KBBC have had for a long time.

Frank also supported the KBBC actively when he stepped down from the committee and could always be relied upon for help at a KBBC function.

Frank will surely be missed by all that knew him. Our thoughts are with his wife and children.

The committee plans a monthly event, generally every second Thursday and we depend on volunteers in the community to give a talk, demonstration etc.

Australian Rules Football Section (Auskick)

Have you tried ‘Auskick’?  It’s a great alternative to soccer and rugby.

“NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for boys and girls and their families. Through our WEEKLY COACHING PROGRAM you’ll learn the skills of the game through appropriately modified activities and rules, play football in a fun and safe environment and make plenty of new friends too!“

No prior skills are necessary; all that is required is keen enthusiasm.

The program runs during school term at the Panaga Padang every Wednesday between 5.00 to 6.00 pm and is run by Australian Rules Football Section of the Panaga Club.  All players must be registered prior to participating in the program.

On completing the registration form provided, you will then be officially registered with the AFL. Further information can be found at the Auskick Website (http://www.aflauskick.com.au/). First time participants in the program will receive, an Auskick Pack (which includes a football, backpack, hat, footy info and a drink bottle). Registration for first timers is $20 (including the bag and goodies). This fee is then reduced to $10.

Registration forms need to be handed to any of the people listed below.

Any questions please contact the organisers below or email us at auskickbrunei@yahoo.com.au.

Cricket Section

Cricket Activity

Activity in the Cricket Section is hotting up!  The Panaga Club representative team has won their first trophy in recent history taking runners up in the Petrokon 6-a-side tournament against Ramana's Rockers on the Panaga Padang.  Importantly, the Cricket Section also have taken delivery of their astro-turf matting pitch and will be playing with a traditional cricket ball more frequently from now on.  Practices/Playing times will be on Sunday mornings, with a weekday evening practice on the cards sometime soon.  Most protective equipment is available to Cricket Section members who participate, so little prior experience or personal equipment is required.  Plans being worked on include a moveable batting net to facilitate neater practice in the middle and reinstatement of a southern end sight-screen.

Come out and have a go or just come down and talk to some of the participants if you see things going on.

Alternatively please contact the Panaga CC at the following email address: panagacc@hotmail.com.

SWIBER MENS’ AND LADIES’ TENNIS DOUBLES TOURNAMENT, 8-15 JAN 2012

This was a really memorable tennis tournament - and one of the best seen at the Panaga Club, Kuala Belait, in recent years.  Not only was it very well organised, there were some outstanding matches and excellent sportsmanship – and the weather was wonderful.  In fact, well over 100 matches had no weather delays at all!

In the Mens’ Championship Main Draw, the second, third and fourth seeds lost in the quarter finals, leaving the top seeds, Martijn Van Haaster/Jeroen Veen, to narrowly defeat surprise finalists and seventh seeds, James Kok/John Foo, in a close and exciting encounter.  The final score was: 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 and the match lasted for well over 2 hours.  The Ladies’ Final winners were Jackie Kwong/Vivian Lau who proved too consistent for Melanie/Millie Lau, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

In the Trophy Men’s final, after a very close first set, Robert Green/Alan Fletcher defeated Tim Goodall/Philippe Dupont 7-5, 6-1.  The Trophy Ladies’ Final was won by Petra/Erani who defeated Alice Wong/Tracey Lineberry, in a competitive and very close match 6-3, 3-6,10-8.  In the Plate Men’s Final, Rommel Escobia/Jojo Manacap defeated Tony Sim/Thangamalai. The Plate Ladies’ Final was won by Catherine Gabites/Jacqui Veen, who got the better of Janet Locke/Wana Gapar.

With an unusual tournament format, many pairs played over 4 matches - just what was needed after the Christmas break.  With so many friendly, exciting or competitive matches during the week, the players enjoyed a delicious buffet- many recalling a “good” or “unlucky” shot….or tricky windy conditions.  After the trophy presentation, speeches and a Lucky Draw, many tired players went home happily, to rest…

Congratulations go to Swiber, the sponsors, to the tennis committee, organisers (especially Menna and Tess), umpires and players.  What a great start to the 2012 Panaga tennis calendar!
