The Scottish Community
History
Based on available records, the first formally constituted Scottish Society in Borneo ‘The St. Andrews - Society of British Borneo’ was founded in Seria in 1949. Informal get-togethers existed much earlier - records show a St. Andrew’s Night dinner in Miri during 1928. Since these early days, there has always been an association of some form or another in Brunei.
Who are we?
The ‘Scottish Community’ in Kuala Belait exists to enable traditional celebration of key events in the Scottish calendar. Our functions are organised by a committee of volunteers and are spread throughout the year. They include Burns' Night, the Panaga Highland Games, St. Andrew's Night, and other social activities such as Ceilidhs with traditional Scottish Dancing.
Like all good Scottish Clans the Scottish Community has a Chieftain. Currently we are ably led by our Chieftain Bruce Cowe.
Here are a few words from Bruce:
Events
The Highland Games are a major sporting event open to all, and are held in late June on the Panaga Padang. Track and field events are held throughout the day along with children's activities for a family day out. Performances by pipe bands, the ever popular tug-of-war competition, and a full track and field program lend a true flavour of Scotland in the Far East.

St Andrew’s Night is held in late November on the nearest Saturday to St Andrew’s day (30th November). St Andrew is the Patron Saint of Scotland and celebrations are held worldwide by Scottish communities to mark this special day. We celebrate with a formal Black tie dinner, traditional speeches and dancing. As we host 180+ people on the night, this event is typically held in a large hotel in the Miri area.
Ceilidh dancing is a popular part of our events but don't worry about knowing the steps in advance as a dance caller is provided to teach as we go along. An element of improvisation is even appreciated!
