Optimists

Give your children a head start by allowing them to learn sailing and become their own captains (Helms) at early age.

Optimists

Sailing is an interesting outdoors sport and it is particular rewarding to learn it in Brunei due to the perfect weather conditions (hot weather, warm water and benign winds). Optimist sailing is a good experience for your children because it allows them to develop into independent and responsible sailors.

Optimists

Children age 7 and above, if they are competent swimmers are welcome to participate in the bi-yearly/yearly Optimist sailing courses. The sailing course will introduce your child to the world of sailing covering safety aspects, weather and tide, parts of the boat, important knots, the five essentials for dinghy sailing, capsize drill and racing skills. Your children will probably like sailing by the time they have finished the course.

Optimists

Once they have passed the sailing course they are invited to participate in the weekly races and occasional sail up to the bridge on Saturday afternoons. All sailing events are supervised by an Officer Of the Day (OOD) and an Assistant Officer Of the Day (AOOD) who is making sure that a rescue boat is always on the river for any help the young sailors would require. The Optimist Section is self-managed by the parents and their support for rigging up, launching the boats and de-rigging is required during the course and for organizing the weekly races.

OptimistsEvery month the children are competing for having their name engraved in the ‘Monthly mug’ and during the season the children are accumulating points for participating and winning in races. Based on the accumulated points the KBBC Optimist section awards the Bronze (75 points), Silver (250 points) and Gold (450 points) sailing awards.

Hence, come along and enjoy regular participation in the sailing races and your child will be recognized for his taking part and the new learned skills with the above mentioned awards. Apart from the positive points aforesaid, the weekly sailing events are also a chance to meet and socialize with like-minded parents.
