Commodore’s Annual Report - 2005/06
After over 2 years as Commodore, it is with regret that this will be my last report. Being unable to allocate appropriate time to the club, or my real job, both are suffering. In addition, our cruising yacht has sat seemingly unloved in the river for the same period and it’s now time to devote my spare time to her. I also have a secret desire to get out there and beat the Star of Siam in the 2007 Borneo Cup. It was meant to be 2006.
I will say that on the whole, I have enjoyed my time as Commodore though wish that I could have achieved a little more of what I had set out to do. It has at times been extremely frustrating seeing things I would have been able to address but not having the time to do so.
Niall Horan has kindly volunteered to take over the helm and I am confident that he will do so with the enthusiasm the role deserves.
Highlights of the year:-
Still fresh in our minds, in February the 50th anniversary of the Clubhouse was a huge success and one of the main highlights of my time as Commodore. The regatta / open day turned out to be a great fun day for all involved and hopefully inspired a few of the members to take up some the activities the club has to offer. Several newcomers put their hands to the rowing, tried sailing, petanque or took a spin in the Buccaneer.
The “Grand Ball” that evening has been described by many as the best ever, it’s success being largely due do the brilliant performance of the “4Notes”.
In making the 50th such a great achievement, a big thanks goes to Bengisu Koksaloglu, Lorraine Wong, Nigel Snaith, my wife, Linda as well as the section heads who each played their part to make the regatta work so well.
Unlike the 2004 open day, there were no passing squalls to facilitate Hobie Cat sailing demonstrations over the top of the pontoon. An act for which Stuart Whitely will never be forgotten.
In November, the diving section received the honour of winning the BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) Duke of Edinburgh award for their environmental Studies on the impact of the oil/gas industry on marine ecosystems. Doug Bell, Steve Holyoak and John Elder received the award at Buckingham Palace on behalf of all those who participated.
April 2005 saw the Star of Siam coming away with no less than 4 trophies plus other memorabilia in the week long Borneo cup Yachting Challenge. We won the Labuan to Miri passage race for the club class on handicap and even managed to take line honours over a far more modern Beneteau during one race in the Miri series. This was a memorable event, both on the water and during the evening festivities. One which I highly recommend to all members. (Experience helpful but not essential.)
The Hobie cat championships were held in November with slightly better winds than last year but quite a swell making negotiating the surf at times, entertaining. As always, they were a great success being fought out by 18 teams. Roger Marsh, Matt Newman and the rest of the section did a great job organising the event and keeping things running smoothly.
