Linedancing

Instructor: Ho Mei Ling

Linedancing is the latest craze of dancing in South East Asia. It has swept USA, UK, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia by storm, and it is gaining popularity in Brunei.

Some of you may wonder what exactly is Linedancing; how did it get started in Panaga Club; how difficult is (to learn) linedancing; and whether one needs to know how to dance in order to linedance. So read on to clear your doubts.

Linedancing is basically a choreographed form of popular dance with a repeating sequence of steps for the duration of the music. The flexibility of linedancing is that you do not need a partner. The dancers stand in one or more lines during the dance. Dancing skills are also not required.

Linedancing was introduced to Panaga Club in July 2005 by Mei Leng as a trial to a handful of bubbly and enthusiastic ladies who were keen to learn to dance and would like to treat it as routine exercises, with the hope to losing some calories at the same time. The trial period was meant to last six weeks during the summer term of 2005.

Within a month, the number of participants doubled. The ladies enjoyed the music and dances so much that a request was put forward to turn the session into a twice-a-week exercise routine. New classes were scheduled to meet the increasing demand for lessons at more suitable times. To accommodate this and to smoothen out minor administrative issues, linedancing was taken out of the Social Dance Section three months later and parked under the Aerobic Section in November 2005.

Today we have about 20 linedancers in Panaga Club who meet on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons at MPH (Multi-Purpose Hall). At the start of each class/lesson, after a quick warm up and stretching, a revision is given on basic steps and routines. We go through the dances learned in previous weeks so that we do not forget.

We dance to country music, pop music, latino music and modern songs by Celine Dion, Ricky Martin, Lionel Richie, Lou Bega, Westlife, Cliff Richard and a lot more. We learn to rock and step-turn, shuffle and glide, sway our hips and shimmy to the rhythms of Cha-Cha, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Mambo for about 75 minutes every lesson.

So why are you pondering and waiting? Just walk in and join the Panaga Linedancers, have some fun, and stay in shape with your body, mind and soul.
